Guaranteed F1 Metriaclima aurora:

You won't find this rare fish species at your local fish store! The 'F1' notation means first generation bred from wild caught fish. Now these fish are available for sale

F1 fish have the same traits as their wild parents. However, they're better for many reasons.

First, they are less likely to have parasites or diseases. As a result F1s are the best choice for community fish tanks.

Second, F1s are the best brood stock choice because they are easy to breed in comparison to wild fish.

Third, you won't have to worry about this fish going extinct!

Many fish around the world are at risk of overfishing. While Metriaclima aurora likoma does not have this problem at the moment, it is important to be aware of our impact on the natural world.

Buy F1, F2 or F3 when possible. This gives you the same high quality genetics found in fish from the wild. But, you won't have to worry about your affect on the amount left in the wild.

Additionally, we breed this strain in house at NemoLabs HQ in Hilton Head, SC. Here we provide settings that mimic their natural habitat in the wild.

Rest assured you are buying fish bred and brought up with love and care. Moreover, fish raised in a biotope that allows them to grow and behave naturally with clean water and a proper diet.

Aurora Cichlid Bio:

The aurora cichlid was originally described in 1976 as Pseudotropheus aurora by Dr. Warren E. Burgess in Malawi. This is a fish of many names! Similar to many other "mbuna", it is now correctly redescribed by distinguished ichthyologists Ad Konings and Jay Stauffer.

Initially Metriaclima aurora's vulnerable IUCN status put it on the Red List of Threatened Species. From 2006 to 2018 it was illegal to import this fish for sale. Further study of this fish determined its extant populations to be thriving.

Unlikely to be impacted by overfishing or pollution after transfer to a protected zone, the IUCN removed the aurora from the Red List in 2018. Which makes these fish all the more special! You could not find anyone selling legal F1 Aurora for more than 10 years in the US!

Geographic Range Information:

You can find Metriaclima aurora at home swimming between the rocks in Lake Malawi. Also above stretches where the rock meets the sand.

This variant for sale is native to Likoma Island.

This species also has variants native to Chizmulu Island in east Malawi as well as Mara Point, Mbweca, and Tumbi Point off the coast of Mozambique.

Also, you can find other variations of the aurora cichlid in Lake Malawi National Park at Thumbi West Island and near Cape Maclear off Otter Point, Illala Gap and Domwe Island, where it has been translocated.

Aurora Cichlid Care Requirements:

M. aurora is a territorial fish. They are not very large, but they are aggressive. As a result, they require a fish tank that is at least 50 gallons with a lot of rocks. They will do best with a soft sand substrate as they like to dig. Course gravel can damage their fins, gills and scales.

Also you want to keep this fish in groups of 6 or more. This helps to minimize damage from battles over females and territory.  They are omnivores and will need a diet that consists of no more than 40% protein. We recommend North Fin or NLS.
